Kinect virtual therapist detects depression in real time. The University of Southern California’s Institute for Creative Technologies is on the way to develop a virtual human platform which is designed as a support tool for specialist and healthcare providers. It is a powerful tool helping to diagnose depression. On which level it is, whether patients need urgent support or it can be completed immediately.
The platform gives the special chance to implement face-to-face communication between clinician and the patient. Kinect virtual human automatically grasps the patient’s state and through the specific gestures, speech he understands the state of the patient. The virtual clinician asks questions, guides conversations, analyses each answer, nodes and even “hmms” at the appropriate times.
People don’t have to get surprised as Kinect has shown its abilities like being used in hospitals, in healthcare, in schools, it is also utilized for oral function disorders, for surgery support, for chronic diseases and many more.
Professors note that this is a very useful way of motivation for patients not to waste time and get certain diagnose which is not far from personal one. This non-verbal dictations aren’t usually going to be analyzed when making a depression detected. This process can easily identify many cases which could have been missed out before.
